Reserving an Apartment:
You need to speak to Marta
González mgonzale@catie.ac.cr
(506) 558-2422
about reserving an apartment. If you know when you will be arriving
and it is NOT during business hours (7-4), you can ask her to leave the key
with the guard at the gate. If you are arriving during the day, you
will need to go to Marta's office in posgrado to get the key.
The cleaning staff cleans the apartments between students, but be prepared
to do a little cleaning yourself as you settle in.
For prices and descriptions of housing options see
[Living].

ISIC
Card:
ISIC
(International Student Identity Card)
Becoming a member of ISIC gives you benefits including discounted airfare
as well as evacuation and repatriation of remains insurance. This is
required by
Study Abroad in the
International
Programs Office (IPO). To get a card you need to take a passport
photo and $40 to IPO (Morrill Hall 209, 208-885-4075). You will have to renew this
every January.
*This may not be necessary now since the UI insurance covers evacuation
and repatriation of remains. Check with Study Abroad in the IPO.

STORAGE INSURANCE:
It is difficult to get renter's/storage insurance without having a permanent
US address. Below are a couple of options:
[top]
shipping books:
An inexpensive way to ship books from the US is the
M-Bag service at the post office. It costs about $1 per pound, but
it takes 4-6 weeks for your books to arrive. Make sure to put your
stuff in a sturdy box and tape it up good. Even though they put
the box in a large grain sack and tie it shut, it gets thrown around a bit.
To ship books back to the US talk to Dina.

Customs:
(˝ - 1
hour)
Make sure to fill out the form given to you on the plane. Go to the
"Foreigner" line to get your 3 month tourist passport stamp. Continue
on to customs, and make sure to tell them that you are with CATIE because they may
give you preferential treatment.

Airport Shuttle:
-
CATIE transportation - $82 (It is worth asking if someone
will be in San José when you arrive, because they
will sometimes pick you up for free.)
-
Taxi - $10 from the airport to San José
-
Taxi - $45-50 from the airport Turrialba

Embassy:
It's not necessary, but a good idea to register with the
US Embassy
(Calle 120 Avenida 0, Pavas, San José - west of Parque
Sabana)
when you arrive. Go between 8:00 am and noon M-F. Take
your passport and check in at the main gate. They will direct you to
the appropriate office. You can also
register online.
